Mothlight

1963 · 4 min Animation
5.6 / 10 · TMDB

Seemingly at random, the wings and other bits of moths and insects move rapidly across the screen. Most are brown or sepia; up close, we can see patterns within wings, similar to the veins in a leaf. Sometimes the images look like paper cutouts, like Matisse. Green objects occasionally appear. Most wings are translucent. The technique makes them appear to be stuck directly to the film.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take

Stan Brakhage constructs the film as a tactile experience, relying on the physical material of real moth wings and insect parts glued directly to the filmstrip. He explores the very nature of the cinematic image, its material base, and the possibility of creating motion without photography.

What lingers after viewing is a hypnotic, flickering memory of organic patterns transformed into pure light and movement, a fleeting dance of decay and permanence. — MovieFinder Editorial
