Sou Makimoto performs his duties in the city hall's 'send-off' department, organizing funerals for those who die alone. He maintains a strict routine, avoiding office chatter and preferring the company of cemetery records. His carefully constructed isolation begins to fracture when he encounters the living — relatives, friends, or simply strangers touched by the departed.
