Blackadder's Christmas Carol

1988 · 43 min Comedy TV Movie
7.6 / 10 · TMDB

Ebenezer Blackadder is the only kind man in London, whose generosity drives his servants to despair and his relatives to ruin. On Christmas Eve, he is visited by a spirit to show how miserly and vile his ancestors were, and how miserable his future descendant will become if Ebenezer does not change. Yet, instead of repentance, Blackadder draws some very practical conclusions from these supernatural visits, deciding that kindness is clearly not in his best interest.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take

Rowan Atkinson as the virtuous Ebenezer perfects absurdity, creating an anti-hero whose righteousness becomes the source of comedy. The script brilliantly inverts Dickens' classic tale, turning a moral lesson into a cynical survival guide.

Those who tire of saccharine holiday specials will find a deliciously wicked alternative here. What lingers after the credits is the sharp aftertaste of satire, aimed squarely at Victorian propriety and the very idea of redemption. — MovieFinder Editorial
