The Prince and Betty

1919 · 50 min Comedy
7.5 / 10 · TMDB

John Maude, a young American, must find employment after falling for society girl Betty Keith. A sudden offer whisks him away to the tiny island nation of Mervo, where businessman Benjamin Scobell hires him to impersonate the lost prince. The charade is meant to draw crowds to Mervo's new casino, positioning it as a rival to Monte Carlo. Complications arise when Scobell's stepdaughter turns out to be Betty herself. Accused by his love of being a mere shill for a gambling den, John shuts down the casino and attempts to stage a revolution, aiming to transform Mervo into a republic.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take

This early feature from the makers of 'Pollyanna' deftly blends romance, impersonation, and light social satire. The plot of a faux prince unfolds with the brisk pace of silent comedy, relying on witty title cards and expressive physical performance.

What lingers after the reel is a charming, surprisingly principled tale where love and integrity triumph over commercial greed, delivered with Artcraft Pictures' signature polish. — MovieFinder Editorial
