Narcisus and Psyche is based on a novel by Sandor Weores which was adapted by Vilmos Csaplar and director Gabor Body for a feature-length film. Borrowing the character of Psyche from mythology and placing her in Europe in the 19th century, the authors give her a "modern" life. She is an attractive young woman - and remains so throughout the film, in spite of one hardship after another. Psyche is libidinous, and her prurient interests shock her staid contemporaries.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take

Gábor Bódy constructs the film as a complex psychoanalytic collage, relying on the mythological archetype to explore the nature of desire and its clash with social mores. The visual poetry serves to immerse the viewer in the protagonist's inner landscape.

What lingers after viewing is a hypnotic, dreamlike journey into the subconscious, where eroticism becomes a language of liberation. The experience is one of confronting the taboo layers of the human psyche — MovieFinder Editorial
