The Lone Ume Tree
Tamako, a popular fortune teller, has lived for years in an old house with her adult son Tadao, who has an intellectual disability and autism. Their neighbors frequently complain about his unpredictable actions. When a spot opens at a group home run by the company that operates Tadao's community workshop, Tamako decides to let him move in, hoping to foster his independence. This sudden shift in environment, however, only serves to confuse Tadao, unraveling the delicate fabric of their long-established life and exposing the arduous road to self-reliance.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take
The film sidesteps melodrama, offering instead a raw and respectful examination of maternal love frayed by exhaustion and an adult child's right to a life of his own. Its gaze is patient, lingering on the routines and silent exchanges that define a shared existence.
What lingers after the credits is a profound, quiet ache—a story that provides no easy solutions but deeply contemplates the cost of independence and the weight of letting go. — MovieFinder Editorial
Director: Kotaro Wajima
