6.9 / 10 · TMDB

An Italian painter, Antonio Berti, pays a visit to Reims to his friend Robert Maurisson, a banker with political views on the town hall, who hides, under an affable air and an irreproachable dignity, a libertine and cynical temperament. Charged by the notable with the restoration of paintings exhibited in the cathedral, the artist calls on Cathy, a young girl from the choir, to serve as his model. The young girl will be found dead a few hours after their interview, near one of Robert's properties.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take

Director Jean-Pierre Mocky constructs a narrative on the contrast between outward respectability and inner decay, using the atmosphere of the Gothic cathedral and bourgeois interiors as a metaphor for a double life. He relies on a restrained, almost detective-like intrigue where every dialogue and glance carries hidden meaning.

What lingers after the viewing is a slow but inexorable revelation of a world where art, religion, and power serve as a cover for the darkest passions. The film leaves a chilling aftertaste of hypocrisy that proves more terrifying than any overt violence. — MovieFinder Editorial
