The Muleteer

Ángela, the daughter of a mulatta woman and a Spanish merchant, returns to her village after her mother's death. Her inheritance consists of an old mule and a few coins. In a world where women cannot own land, she decides to become a 'arriera' — a muleteer, challenging the patriarchal foundations of colonial Mexico. The 2025 film explores female independence through a historical drama where every mountain trail becomes a metaphor for the struggle to claim one's own path. Ángela faces distrust, ridicule, and open hostility, but her perseverance gradually changes the attitudes of those around her. Her journey with a caravan of goods transforms into a journey toward inner freedom, where the load on the mule's back feels lighter than the weight of societal prejudice.
