Oh, What a Blow That Phantom Gave Me!

2003 Documentary

Several filmmakers discuss the introduction of Western modes of communication, especially film, to native cultures. While these tools can help a native people to document their own culture, it can also "swallow" their culture, encroaching upon and irreversibly altering it. The film takes its title from a book written by filmmaker Edmund Carpenter in 1972 about his engagement with media in Papua New Guinea.

Oh, What a Blow That Phantom Gave Me! is an acquired taste at 0.0/10. We recommend checking the trailer and synopsis before diving in.

Not every film is made for everyone. Read the synopsis, watch the trailer — you'll know right away if it's for you.

A 2003 film from an era before CGI overload, with real performances that still hit hard. Best for: genre fans and those open to something unconventional.
