Cécile Guyon is young Pierrot. He has fallen in love with the laundress, pretty Jane Renouardt. However, she wants more than a lover whose poor fashion sense impels him to dress as a stage clown. She wants jewelry, pretty clothes, and probably a string of poloponies, so Guyon robs his parents' safe and steals their life savings so he can run off with Mlle Renouardt.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take

The 1916 silent drama constructs its tragedy around the clash between naive infatuation and cold calculation. It explores how blind passion and a thirst for status dismantle family security, relying on the visual metaphor of a clown's costume to underscore the protagonist's inner isolation.

What lingers after viewing is a poignant study of the price paid for an illusion of love, set against the backdrop of early 20th-century Parisian life, where social conventions and material desires overpower genuine sentiment. — MovieFinder Editorial
