🎬 MovieFinder's Take

Lubitsch constructs the film around the tension between opulent spectacle and intimate betrayal. He explores ambition and desire through a series of swift, dramatic turns, relying on Pola Negri's performance which masterfully blends vulnerability with cunning.

What lingers after the final reel is a poignant sense of love as a commodity in a gilded cage of power. Those who tire of simplistic period dramas will find layered tragedy here. — MovieFinder Editorial
