Pontormo - Un amore eretico
Florence, 16th century. Inside the workshop of Mannerist painter Jacopo Pontormo, a radical artistic vision takes shape. Obsessed with transcending Renaissance conventions, Pontormo labors on frescoes for the church of San Lorenzo, a project that defies both artistic tradition and rising religious orthodoxy. His creative heresy draws scrutiny from powerful patrons and the Church, while his intense, ambiguous relationship with his young apprentice, Andrea, fuels gossip and personal turmoil. Against a backdrop of Medici intrigue and the looming shadow of the Counter-Reformation, the film paints a portrait of an artist driven to the brink, sacrificing everything for a beauty deemed dangerous and unorthodox.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take
Luca Vargas's film is a tense, claustrophobic study of artistic obsession. It masterfully frames the act of painting as a subversive and perilous endeavor, where every brushstroke challenges the established order. The psychological unraveling of Pontormo is as compelling as the theological debates simmering in the background.
What lingers after the final frame is the haunting cost of visionary genius. This is a poignant reminder of the eternal conflict between uncompromising creativity and the institutions that seek to control it. — MovieFinder Editorial
