Cesare, a barber in a provincial Italian town, finds himself frozen in a wheelchair—not by illness, but by a broken heart after the woman he loved married another. His paralysis, more psychological than physical, becomes the focal point for the entire community. Around him swirl passions, gossip, and absurd attempts at a 'cure' against the backdrop of rising fascism in the 1920s. From his stationary vantage point, the hero observes the world, and this forced passivity becomes a peculiar form of freedom, allowing him to see what is hidden from his bustling neighbors.
