The Escaping Man
Mei Mei, a ten-year-old girl from a Shanghai working-class neighborhood, finds a stray dog on the street and names him Mao Hu Hu. Her father, a truck driver, is firmly against it. When the dog disappears, Mei Mei is convinced he's been kidnapped. Her detective work leads her into the world of adult transactions and hidden fears. Suspicion falls on the new neighbor, Mr. Chen, whose quiet life conceals its own pain. Parallelly unfolds the story of Mei Mei's father, Qian Wei, struggling with debt and a sense of failure. The film explores how a child's naive love for an animal becomes a catalyst, exposing the fragile bonds within a family and a society where everyone is trying to hold onto what they cherish.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take
Director Shu Qi employs the camera as a quiet observer, capturing neighborhood life in static, almost documentary-like frames that contrast with the child's turbulent inner world.
Anyone ready for a slow, inexorable immersion into a social microcosm will find a story where a father and daughter's personal drama intertwines with questions of class and responsibility. What lingers after is the collision between a child's sense of justice and adult necessity. — MovieFinder Editorial
