A provincial cook named Liu Yuejin arrives in Beijing to make a living. His existence is a constant struggle for survival in the vast, impersonal city where he feels utterly lost. His mundane life is upended when the bag containing his hard-earned savings is stolen. This personal catastrophe propels him on a desperate, absurd chase through the city's underbelly, dragging this ordinary laborer into collisions with petty thieves, corrupt businessmen, and indifferent police. 🎬 MovieFinder's Take
Ma Ye's film is a sharp, frenetic satire of China's roaring capitalism, where the little man is merely a pawn in a much larger game. The narrative unfolds as a detective farce, where Liu Yuejin's every discovery only deepens the absurdity of his predicament.
What lingers after the frantic chase is the poignant image of an ordinary soul buffeted by forces beyond his control, his personal tragedy rendered insignificant by the city's relentless pace. The comedy is undercut by a persistent, biting social critique. — MovieFinder Editorial
