The Eclipse: Courtship of the Sun and Moon

1907 · 9 min Comedy Fantasy Romance
6.0 / 10 · TMDB

In this film, Méliès concocts a combination fairy- and morality tale about the foolishness of trying to look too deeply into the workings of an unstable and inscrutable universe. At a medieval school, an old astronomer begins to teach a class of young men, all armed with telescopes, about the art of scrutinising an imminent eclipse. When a mechanical clock strikes twelve, all the young men rush to the windows and fix their telescopes on the heavens.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take

Méliès constructs a visual parable on the folly of attempting to scrutinize an inscrutable cosmos with mere tools. The film relies on the charming contrast between scholarly preparation and the students' frantic, almost ritualistic observation.

What lingers after viewing is the gentle satire of human ambition, where telescopes become conduits for cosmic comedy rather than understanding. A whimsical reminder that some mysteries defy even the most eager gaze. — MovieFinder Editorial
