Static

2009 · 7 min Documentary
1.0 / 10 · TMDB

Static was filmed from a helicopter circling around the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbour. It was shot shortly after the monument was fully re-opened following the September 11th attacks. Flying alongside the statue, the camera presents us with startling close-up views of its oxidised copper surface. The continual sense of movement is disorienting, undermining its sense of permanence and stability.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take

The film constructs a meditative yet unsettling flight around an iconic symbol, exploring its physical materiality in the shadow of collective trauma. The unstable, circling shots transform the monument into something vulnerable and transient.

What lingers after viewing is a duality—the familiar silhouette stripped of its permanence, revealing the scars of time and history. A cinematic meditation on memory and the resilience of images. — MovieFinder Editorial
