Ben, newly rendered an incomplete quadriplegic after a devastating swimming pool accident, is admitted to a rehabilitation center. He enters a world shared with other patients—tetraplegics, paraplegics, victims of traumatic brain injuries, including one man who has lived with disability since childhood. Their existence is defined by a grueling daily struggle to reclaim the most basic functions: moving a finger, gripping a fork. While some painstakingly regain slivers of mobility, others face the stark verdict of a lifelong condition. Amid the anguish, impotence, and despair, something tenacious takes root: a fragile camaraderie and a stubborn, defiant hope that becomes their essential sustenance.
