🎬 MovieFinder's Take

Geoff Murphy constructs a robust historical epic that relies on the true tensions of the New Zealand Wars. It explores the corrosive cycle of utu (revenge) without simplistic heroes, instead building its narrative on the personal failures and grim determinations of settlers, Māori warriors, and those caught between.

What lingers after the final frame is the breathtaking, almost cruel beauty of the landscapes framing relentless conflict. A raw and essential chapter of colonial history, told with unflinching honesty. — MovieFinder Editorial
