The film constructs its comedy from the stark contrast between a stern, almost caricatured monk and a childish yet powerful apprentice. It relies on slapstick gags, parody of the journey genre, and outright silliness to create a stream of disjointed but amusing sketches.
Those who tire of logical plots will find a parade of ridiculous scenes where magic serves the most mundane and foolish purposes. What lingers after is the feeling of lightweight, unpretentious absurdity. — MovieFinder Editorial
