A stowaway slips aboard a ship embarking on a Vistula River cruise. Mistaken by the captain for a Communist Party cultural coordinator, the quick-witted intruder eagerly assumes the role. He immediately sets to work, manipulating passengers and crew into absurd and vaguely humiliating games. Soon, Tym has everyone under his thumb, establishing his own comedic dictatorship where the mundane rituals of a pleasure cruise are hijacked by surreal, playful tyranny.

"The Cruise" is a masterful satire on the mechanics of power, disguised as a light situational comedy. Maciej Karpinski, as the impostor Tym, is brilliant in his almost childlike yet ruthless inventiveness.
What lingers after viewing is a sense of playful unease, a recognition of how easily arbitrary rules can be accepted when presented as fun. The film's genius lies in making tyranny look like a silly game everyone agrees to play. — MovieFinder Editorial
