July
Ten-year-old Joshua idles away his holiday by the IJsselmeer, a quiet backdrop for his solitude. His world shifts when he encounters Mick, an older, tougher boy who offers friendship at a price: Joshua must climb the forbidden lighthouse. Paralyzed by fear, Joshua fails the test. The arrival of a third boy presents an opportunity for deceit; they convince the newcomer that Joshua succeeded, passing the terrifying challenge onto him. What begins as a childish pact of bravado spirals into a sudden, terrible accident. In the aftermath, Joshua is left clutching a secret too heavy for his young shoulders, unable to confess the truth to his parents.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take
"Juli" is a delicate, atmospheric study of childhood guilt and the crushing weight of a secret. The film's power lies in its restraint, using the vast, silent Dutch landscape to mirror the internal desolation of its young protagonist.
What lingers after the final frame is not the shock of the incident, but the profound ache of a moral burden carried in silence. A poignant reminder of how quickly innocence can fracture. — MovieFinder Editorial

The oppressive quiet of a holiday, vast skies over still water, and sunlight that feels accusatory on an empty shore.
