🎬 MovieFinder's Take
Director Bruce Beresford constructs a compelling narrative on the clash between collectivist ideology and individual aspiration. He works with a strong visual contrast, juxtaposing the rigid, monochromatic discipline of Beijing with the vibrant, expressive freedom of Texas, using ballet as a powerful metaphor for personal and political liberation.
What lingers after the credits is a profound sense of the sacrifices inherent in chasing a dream, and the indelible human cost of choosing between one's art and one's homeland. — MovieFinder Editorial
