Spring 1945, Buchenwald concentration camp. Prisoners hide a three-year-old Jewish boy in their barracks, a child who miraculously survived a new transport's arrival. His discovery threatens death not only to the boy but to the entire camp's underground resistance network. Under conditions of total fear and constant surveillance, a group of inmates of different nationalities unites to save an innocent life. Their defiance pits them not only against the brutality of the SS guards but also against internal divisions among the prisoners themselves, for whom each extra day of survival is already a triumph.

This 2015 film is a potent and worthy adaptation of the classic novel, forgoing excessive pathos to focus on the fragility of humanity within absolute hell. The camera does not look away from the horror, yet finds within it moments of silent camaraderie and incredible fortitude.
What lingers after the credits is not only a bitterness from the historical truth, but a profound conviction that even in utter darkness there is room for the ultimate act of resistance: the preservation of life and dignity. — MovieFinder Editorial
