🎬 MovieFinder's Take

The director constructs a classic melodramatic arc, relying on the stark contrast between idyllic childhood and harsh adulthood. He explores themes of loss and social ascent through the heroine's journey, using visual symbols like the mill and tulips to anchor the emotional landscape.

What lingers after the final frame is a sense of bittersweet poetry—a story about the cost of success and the irretrievable loss of a simpler world. The film maintains its dignity even in its most sentimental moments, showcasing the early power of cinematic storytelling. — MovieFinder Editorial
