Lime Kiln Club Field Day

1913 · 62 min Comedy
5.2 / 10 · TMDB

Modeled after a popular collection of stories known as "Brother Gardener's Lime Kiln Club," the plot features three suitors vying to win the hand of the local beauty. Filmed in 1913, but after considerable footage was shot, the film was abandoned. One hundred years later, the seven reels of untitled and unassembled footage were discovered in the film vaults of the Museum of Modern Art, and are now believed to constitute the earliest surviving feature film starring black actors.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take

The film constructs its humor on the foundation of silent-era physical comedy and archetypal suitors, relying on visual gags and expressive performances to tell its story. It explores the timeless, simple dynamics of courtship and competition with a lighthearted touch.

What lingers after viewing is the charm of a rediscovered artifact, a joyful and historically vital glimpse into early Black cinema, despite its unfinished state. — MovieFinder Editorial
