Director Edward Sedgwick constructs the comedy on the contrast between the horrors of war and the absurd situations the protagonists stumble into. The film relies on the actors' chemistry and explores the physical humor signature of the silent era.

What lingers after the final reel is the charm of an improbable friendship that brings lighthearted chaos to the trenches. — MovieFinder Editorial
