To Be Twenty in the Aures
A band of Breton conscripts, initially resistant and pacifist, find themselves deployed to the scorching hills of Algeria. Thrust into the brutal reality of colonial conflict, these young men are gradually stripped of their ideals and reshaped into hardened soldiers by the horrors they witness and commit. Yet one among them, Yvon, refuses this transformation. In a defiant act of conscience, he deserts, taking with him an FLN prisoner slated for execution at dawn. Their flight through the rugged Aurès mountains becomes a desperate journey—not just for survival, but a raw, visceral quest for a shred of humanity left in the heart of war's inferno.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take
René Vautier crafts a visceral, unflinching autopsy of war's machinery and its corrosion of the human spirit. This is not a film of heroes and battles, but of dirt, fear, and the slow death of conscience.
What lingers after the screen fades is a profound, unsettling silence—the echo of a moral vacuum. It’s a necessary, brutal reminder of the absurd price of lost innocence. — MovieFinder Editorial

Sun-scorched hills, dust-choked silence punctuated by gunfire. A palpable, heavy moral vacuum.
