Stanley, a successful crime novelist, writes from the first-person perspective of real-life killers. Paralyzed by writer's block, his agent suggests a solitary tramping trip through New Zealand's wilderness. Waking on the first morning, he finds his fellow tramper dead. Suddenly, Stanley becomes the prime suspect in a murder he didn't commit, forced to investigate like one of his own fictional protagonists. As he delves into the victim's dark secrets, the line between his literary method and grim reality begins to blur beyond recognition.
