🎬 MovieFinder's Take

The film constructs its drama on the stark contrast between cynical urban society and the patriarchal simplicity of Breton village life, using this clash as its primary narrative engine. It relies on the motifs of Jean Richepin's novel, translating them into the visual language of early cinema.

What lingers after viewing is a harsh moral parable about retribution, where passions lead to irreversible ends. The finale delivers a stark sense of fatalism, with each character trapped by their own desires and societal prejudices. — MovieFinder Editorial
