🎬 MovieFinder's Take

Director Michael Winner constructs an oddball hybrid of war film and comedy, relying on the stark contrast between WWII's grim backdrop and the absurd central duo. He explores themes of unlikely friendship and liberation through an ironic script and the charm of both leads.

Those who tire of standard war dramas will find a whimsical escape story where tension is undercut by gentle humor, and the elephant often seems the most sensible creature. What lingers after the credits is the warmth of this improbable odyssey. — MovieFinder Editorial
