Evil Roy Slade

1972 · 97 min TV Movie Western Comedy
6.2 / 10 · TMDB

Orphaned and left in the desert as an infant, Evil Roy Slade grew up alone—save for his teddy bear—and mean. As an adult, he is notorious for being the "meanest villain in the West"—so he's thrown for quite a loop when he falls for sweet schoolteacher Betsy Potter. There's also Nelson L. Stool, a railroad tycoon, who, along with his dimwitted nephew Clifford (Henry Gibson), is trying to get revenge on Evil Roy Slade for robbing him.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take

The film constructs a classic western framework only to gleefully deconstruct it, relying on slapstick, parody, and exaggerated character tropes. It explores the absurdity of genre conventions through the deadpan performance of John Astin as the titular villain, whose ruthless persona is hilariously undone by sudden, sincere romance.

Those who tire of gritty realism will find a cheerful spoof that treats cowboy myths with affectionate mischief. What lingers after the credits is the simple joy of its unpretentious, broad humor. — MovieFinder Editorial
