When war breaks out between Denmark and Germany in 1848, Christian from poor Nyboder is hired as a bugler. Zealous and proud, he leaves Copenhagen with his old father and cousins Orla and Frants to defend Schleswig against the German enemy. 🎬 MovieFinder's Take

The film constructs its narrative through concise yet expressive silent imagery, relying on the contrast between patriotic fervor and the grim reality of war. Using simple, almost chronicle-like scenes, it explores duty and personal courage in the face of impersonal conflict.

What lingers after viewing is a sense of early cinema's purity, where story is conveyed through gesture and glance, and tension arises from pure action and character resolve. — MovieFinder Editorial
