In the trembling Russian village of Popoffski, a young woman (Katherine Grant) is wooed by a hopeful lover, the son of a humble pool shark (Stan) right under the very nose of her father. When the man proposes marriage to her the father is happy to let her go, seeing as he has nine other children to worry about. 🎬 MovieFinder's Take

The film constructs its comedy from the clash between simple village life and the absurd intrusion of military authority. It relies on visual gags and situational humor to poke fun at rigid formalities.

Those who tire of heavy dramas will find a charming, if slightly chaotic, celebration of romance against all odds. What lingers after the final reel is the warmth of its eccentric characters. — MovieFinder Editorial
