Frau Kaminski, the new janitor's wife, steps into the courtyard of a Berlin apartment building. She is immediately swept up by the gossipy Frau Mierig from the rear tenement, who provides a whirlwind tour of the tenants and their peculiarities. Gerhard Lamprecht's camera weaves through stairwells and doorways, sketching a vibrant cross-section of Weimar Germany. Here, social climbers brush shoulders with war profiteers and the quietly desperate. The building becomes a microcosm of a society in flux, where every whispered conversation and furtive glance reveals the hierarchies and heartbreaks of a nation rebuilding from the ashes.
