Naval Sham Battle at Newport
Showing the attacking forces drawn up in line of battle. They immediately commence firing on the shore batteries. The batteries return the fire with telling effect, but are at last silenced by the overwhelming forces of the enemy. In the distance can be seen the ruins of a bridge destroyed by the invading forces. The smoke thickens as the firing becomes general, and the effect is superb.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take
The film constructs a brief yet dense episode of a staged naval battle, relying on actual military exercises for its subject. It employs a static camera for a panoramic view, turning maneuvers into a clear and legible visual diagram of conflict.
What lingers after viewing is a sense of witnessing the birth of a genre, where smoke screens and ship formations create a nearly tactile illusion of presence. It’s a foundational piece of cinematic militiana. — MovieFinder Editorial
