The Garden
Frank arrives for a visit with his friend Josef, eager to see the prized rabbits and meet Josef's wife, Mary. The pastoral calm of the suburban garden is instantly fractured by a bizarre discovery: the entire perimeter fence is composed of living people, standing silent and still, holding hands. This surreal, human chain becomes the unsettling focal point of the gathering, casting a long shadow over the polite conversation and throwing Frank's understanding of his hosts' domestic life into disarray. A simple social call descends into a quietly absurd examination of conformity, ownership, and the porous line between the ordinary and the profoundly strange.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take
A quintessential and brilliantly understated gem of the Czech New Wave. Director Jan Švankmajer presents a surreal conceit with deadpan realism, allowing the chilling metaphor of the human fence to resonate through impeccable composition and subtle performance.
What lingers after the final frame is not shock, but a profound unease about the systems we accept and the quiet ways we become complicit. The film is a masterclass in saying everything by showing almost nothing. — MovieFinder Editorial

A pastoral idyll permeated by a quiet, bone-deep surrealism and unspoken dread.
