The Gown Shop

1923 · 15 min Comedy
4.0 / 10 · TMDB

Here we have 'The Gown Shop', very much in Semon's usual style but with fewer laughs than usual. Semon plays his default character, a grotesque hard-working incompetent. (I'm going to be using the word 'grotesque' a lot in this particular review.) This time round, he blunders into a boutique. After causing some damage he can't pay for, Larry is put to work as a general dogsbody. Mayhem ensues.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take

The short film constructs its comedy on the clash between a refined gown shop setting and the protagonist's grotesque, chaotic physicality. It relies on Semon's well-established formula of rapid-fire gags, escalating destruction, and pantomimic absurdity.

Those who tire of subtlety will find a straightforward parade of silent-era slapstick, where the satire is thin but the commitment to mayhem remains absolute. — MovieFinder Editorial
