Bud's Recruit

1918 · 26 min Comedy Drama
4.9 / 10 · TMDB

This WWI home-front comedy is the earliest surviving film of King Vidor, who would later go on to make such classics as The Big Parade and The Crowd. A two-reeler, it's a propaganda comedy involving a little boy who can't wait to go fight against the Kaiser, and who sets an unrelentingly patriotic (and militaristic) example for his draft-age, feminized brother and peace-lovin' mother.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take

Vidor's early short constructs a domestic satire of wartime propaganda through the lens of a child's fervor. It relies on the contrast between the boy's militant enthusiasm and his family's reluctance to explore the absurdities of home-front patriotism.

What lingers after viewing is the curiosity of seeing a future master of epic cinema finding his voice in a brisk, pointed comedy of persuasion. — MovieFinder Editorial
