Goya in Bordeaux

1999 · 100 min Drama History
5.8 / 10 · TMDB

Francisco Goya (1746-1828), deaf and ill, lives the last years of his life in voluntary exile in Bordeaux, a Liberal protesting the oppressive rule of Ferdinand VII. He's living with his much younger wife Leocadia and their daughter Rosario. He continues to paint at night, and in flashbacks stirred by conversations with his daughter, by awful headaches, and by the befuddlement of age, he relives key times in his life.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take

Carlos Saura constructs the film as a series of painterly tableaux, blurring the line between reality and memory. The director relies on visual poetry, exploring the inner world of genius through its own aesthetic—somber tones, stark shadows, and phantasmagoric visions.

What lingers after viewing is not a historical account, but the dreamlike substance of creation itself, where agony and ecstasy become pigments on the canvas. A meditation on the act of making art. — MovieFinder Editorial
