The Man Who Came to the Harbor Festival

1961 · 89 min

A traveling troupe arrives in a lively southern port town during the Tanabata festival, led by the mysterious swordsman Daigorō, whose incredible skill quickly makes him a local sensation. Beneath his fierce persona, however, he hides a tragic past: he is actually Hikōichi, a fisherman who lost his beloved Oyū to a cruel feudal lord years earlier. Reunited during the festival under the stars of Tanabata, the two lovers attempt to reclaim their happiness, but the lord’s jealousy and deception lead them toward a heartbreaking fate.

Not every film is made for everyone. Read the synopsis, watch the trailer — you'll know right away if it's for you.

A classic from 1961. They don't make them like this anymore — which is exactly why you should watch it. Best for: genre fans and those open to something unconventional.
