Don Rodrigo de Aranda, an elderly count, returns from America to discover which of his two granddaughters is the legitimate heir to his title and fortune. One is the daughter of his deceased son, the other possibly the child of his daughter-in-law's infidelity. Blinded yet possessing piercing insight, he settles into the family estate, where his presence becomes a trial and a judgment for the entire household. His quest for truth evolves into an examination of nobility's very essence, which he comes to believe resides not in bloodline, but in a person's honor and inherent dignity.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take
This adaptation of Benito Pérez Galdós's novel is a potent drama of morality, family, and social convention, centered on the formidable figure of an uncompromising patriarch. The film expertly balances personal tragedy with social satire, probing the chasm between public status and private worth.
What lingers after the final scene is the stark confrontation between inherited privilege and earned virtue. The old count's blindness becomes a powerful metaphor for society's own failure to see true character. — MovieFinder Editorial
