Max, a former circus clown, discovers his only chance at survival is to return under the big top he swore he'd never see again. But the circus has changed: robot jugglers have replaced trained bears, and the director demands Max not make the audience laugh, but teach an artificial intelligence the art of 'perfect clowning'.
