Widow Tung, a stern guardian of Confucian virtue, maintains a quiet household with her daughter and servant in a remote village. The arrival of a dashing young cavalry captain, Yang, billeted in her home, fractures her disciplined world. A silent, potent attraction grows between the widow and the soldier, complicated further when her blossoming daughter also develops feelings for the captain.
