Duvall, a former police officer, returns to his hometown after his father's death. His inheritance isn't property or money, but a strange collection of audio cassettes containing the last words of death row inmates. The first tape begins with a whisper of his own name. With each playback, the boundary between past and present blurs, and the voices from the tapes start to manifest in reality. The townspeople avoid Duvall as if guarding a family secret. His investigation leads him to an abandoned prison where his father served as a chaplain.
