Major John Cramer receives an order that seems absurd: defend Austria's Castle Itter, holding French VIP prisoners, from retreating SS troops. His force is a handful of American soldiers and German Wehrmacht deserters. Alongside former enemies, they must withstand a siege by fanatical SS soldiers for whom the captives are a final target before the Reich's collapse. The plot is based on real events from the final days of World War II in Europe, when allies and Wehrmacht soldiers fought side by side for the first time. The film explores the fragility of alliances under extreme conditions and the limits of soldierly duty when the war is already lost, but the battle is not yet over.
