Emma, a restoration architect, accepts a commission for a 19th-century manor deep in New England. "Every stone here remembers more than it would like to," the old caretaker tells her. From her first day at Hawthorne Manor, she is plagued by inexplicable phenomena: shadows move independently of light sources, books rearrange themselves in the library, and the old mirror in the ballroom sometimes reflects a face that is not her own. Investigating the Hawthorne family history, Emma discovers the manor was built not as a residence, but as a kind of trap for something ancient. A local amateur historian shows her blueprints where the basement has a strange, illogical layout resembling a labyrinth or a ritual circle. The deeper she delves into the mystery, the more she realizes the house is not merely haunted—it lives its own life and has plans for her. The last entry in the previous owner's journal reads: "It feeds on fear, but it craves consent."
