The Lovely Month of May

Paris in the spring of 1962, the Algerian War just ended. The camera takes to the streets, into apartments, onto construction sites, posing a simple yet profoundly complex question to a cross-section of citizens—a student, a laborer, an immigrant, a housewife: “What is happiness to you?”. The answers flow: some speak of material comfort and a new television, others of peace and freedom from fear, still others of love and family. It is a collective portrait of a society at a crossroads, captured in a moment of rare, fragile hope.
