Jake, a white classical pianist going nowhere, and Leroy, a self-taught Black saxophonist, become accidental neighbors in a dilapidated New York boarding house. Their first encounter ends in a shouting match over the thin wall and loud music. When the landlord threatens to evict them both, they're forced to team up for a street jazz competition with a cash prize big enough to cover rent. Absurd rehearsals in a tiny room, where Jake's rigid études clash with Leroy's freeform improvisations, slowly birth something unique. Their duo catches the eye of an eccentric producer who sees them as a "genius marketing gimmick." Behind the scenes of a music industry full of stereotypes, they must decide whether to become puppets for fame or stay true to their chaotic, honest sound.
