My First of May
Lin Xiaohui returns to her hometown after her father's death to settle the inheritance—an old photo studio. Among the dusty negatives, she finds a portrait of an unfamiliar woman whose face is a mirror image of her own. This photograph sets off a chain of events, forcing Lin to dig through family archives and question elderly relatives who guard their silence. Gradually, the story of her grandmother emerges, a woman whose fate was rewritten by war and whose love was sacrificed to duty. The investigation becomes a journey through time, where every discovered letter or old object becomes a key to understanding not only the family's past but also Lin Xiaohui's own unresolved questions about choice and belonging.

🎬 MovieFinder's Take
Director Zhang Wei constructs the narrative on subtle details—the creak of floorboards in the empty studio, the rustle of photo paper in the developer, the long pauses in conversations. The frame often lingers on hands flipping through albums or on reflections in the shop window that connect past and present.
What lingers after the credits is a quiet clarity, like the feeling after a long talk with the eldest family member. Here, the silence between words speaks louder than any dialogue. — MovieFinder Editorial
